I haven't visited this blog for quite a while. But while I was visiting Charice's unofficial music video and the official one, something struck me.
We cannot deny that Charice has brought unquantifiable pride to the country. These past two years, since she stepped on the Land of Milk and Honey, she has not stopped wowing audiences not just in the US, but also in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Filipinos would always comment stuff like, "I am so proud of her" and " I am proud to be Filipino" or "Proud to be Pinoy" which I find normal as I feel the same.
However, I was surprised and felt odd as there are comments saying that we should not do that as it would shoo away other nationalities and that it is irritating. These comments come from Filipinos.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Charice on the Ellen Show
The long awaited guesting of Charice has arrived. December 19, 2007, though I believed it was taped a few days back.
If I am not mistaken she was the first homegrown Filipina to ever guest on Ellen. Though she guested first, Ramiel Malubay, who is full blooded Filipina, was raised in the US and that was because she was an American Idol alumus.
Going back to Charice, here is what happened at the Ellen Show.
Charice on the Ellen Show
Ellen and the audience were blown away. She got her first standing ovation in the US.
Charice sang And I am Telling You and I Will Love You. You can't imagine how proud I was. Never been prouder in my whole life.
So young and innocent and yet she moved around the stage like she was doing it for 50 years.
Incredible vocals.
Just a proof how Ellen was blown away, the very next day, she talked about Charice again on her show.
Ellen can't get enough of Charice
Everybody thought, she was a splash in the fan. Nope, she isn't because that was just the start of her high profile guestings.

Charice Before Starking
My hunger for more videos of Charice did not stop in Star King. I had this urge to know where these all began.
As I tirelessly searched for more videos, I learned that these all started with one video post of a fan named FalseVoice of her wildcard performance in Little Big Star, a local talent show in the Philippines hosted by Sarah Geronimo, loosely patterned after American Idol.
Wildcard performance? Yes, it was a callback for all contestants who were given a second shot. She was already eliminated in the first round of the competition.
In that performance she sang, I Will Always Love You by one of her biggest idols, and mine too, Whitney Houston.
See for yourself why she got the slot Charice - I Will Always Love You - Little Big Star. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, she only placed 3rd in the competition.
Going back to the video. This video of Charice caught the attention of Ten Productions from Sweden who had initial recordings with her, but did not push through, but it gave way to more promising career.
The same video and others posted by False Voice were seen by the producers of the Korean show Star King, that prompted them to invite Charice in the show. Another fan (coolsmurf) posted this video of Charice which Ellen Degeneres saw.
It's a chain reaction. From fans who love Charice to death, who had no idea what to expect and whose only intention was to show the world that in the Philippines, there was one little girl with a big voice, can outsing all girls her age.
Without any hint, this Star King Video had been seen by many.

Charice on Star King
After being floored by her performance on ASAP on that day in December of 2007, I immediately found myself googling her name looking for that particular video everybody was talking about - her performance on Star King, a Korean musical variety show (sorry could not find any link, but everybody knows about it by now).
The minute she opened her mouth, everyone in the audience including the judges went wild. You have to watch for yourself to see what I mean. I was not just floored this time. I was lambasted.
Charice on Star King
It's like a bomb had been dropped in South Korea.
That voice from that little frame is so unbelievably powerful.
That confidence and stage presence you will never find in any performer her age.
I need not talk about the performance anymore, just watch the video so you can see her magic on stage.
For me, I have never seen anything like that. It's just unbelievable.
That very moment, my list of my most favorite singers of all time changed, she went straight to the top.
My interest did not stop there, I had to Google all her videos on YouTube. Where was she before this performance, and how did it all start? What made her an internet sensation?

This was one the many videos of her performance in Korea. One post was from a certain "coolsmurf" already reached millions of hits but was removed by youtube due to infringement.
This is the same video that Ellen DeGeneres saw which prompted her to invite Charice to her show.
You will see what everybody saw on that performance.

My Journey with Charice Begins
My journey with Charice began in November 2007. I was watching a local TV News, TV Patrol. The entertainment news was about a little girl who was invited by Ellen De Generes herself to guest on her show. I was skeptical. I shrugged my shoulders, I told myself, maybe she is the just one of those wannabes, dime a dozen singers as there a lots of good Filipino singers. Among Filipino singers and entertainers, only Lea Salonga has actually been recognized in Hollywood, being Kim on Broadway and other plays, singing voices of Jasmin and Mulan, winning Tony and many others.
On the following week, I heard her name again on ASAP07, a musical variety show on ABS-CBN, Philippines, the buzz was the same, so I kind of got interested, I waited for her slot.
But before that, I have never heard of her. I have always been a fan of power singers like Whitney Houston and a Filipina Singer, Regine Velasquez. They "were" on top of my favorite singers of all time. Nobody came after that.
When she finally came on, my journey with that little girl began, I finally learned that her name was Charice Pempengco and this was what my eyes saw Charice on ASAP 07, December 2007.
The minute she stepped on the stage, chills engulfed my body, for no reason at all and when she opened her mouth to sing, I was shivering and tearing up. Where has she been all this time? Or should I ask myself, where have I been?
I could not believe my eyes and ears. Was she singing it live? Of course she was. Was that her voice? Of course it was.
I was so quiet while watching the show. I was in awe and disbelief then I told myself, "so this was all the buzz about". Never in my life have I been so engrossed in a performance even with my top list of singers. I had goosebumps from beginning to end, I cried too, correction, sobbed, I didn't know the reason why.
Soon as her number was finished, I started looking for her in youtube. Of course I started with what started it all: her guesting in South Korea.

Preamble
I have always wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. I remember my teachers in elementary schools with all these essays, I always loved them, I would always be the first to submit the essay and I would always get the highest grade. But this love for writing did not really take off, I took another path, but as they say, first love never dies, and so here I am. Please bear with my limited vocabulary, I write as ideas come to my mind.
My journey into writing will start in this blog and I will not be alone as I decided to dedicate my writing to a little girl who I chanced upon more than two years ago in pony tail and pink checkered skirt. An unassuming little girl at about 15, so small that when she opens her mouth to sing, you will be in awe because of her big voice is unbelievably coming from her small frame.
I fondly call her She Who Sings Like an Angel.
Her name is
Many have written articles about her and you may have read or watched the videos on this blog.
This is how a quiet fan adores a singer almost third his age.
This is how I see her in my own eyes.
Come take the journey with me to a path I have never taken before.
