Infamous "Proud to be Pinoy"

I haven't visited this blog for quite a while. But while I was visiting Charice's unofficial music video and the official one, something struck me.

We cannot deny that Charice has brought unquantifiable pride to the country. These past two years, since she stepped on the Land of Milk and Honey, she has not stopped wowing audiences not just in the US, but also in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Filipinos would always comment stuff like, "I am so proud of her" and " I am proud to be Filipino" or "Proud to be Pinoy" which I find normal as I feel the same.

However, I was surprised and felt odd as there are comments saying that we should not do that as it would shoo away other nationalities and that it is irritating. These comments come from Filipinos.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. "I'm so proud of her" is Universal regardless of heritage and origin, just like saying Hello. PTBF... While other foreigners think it's okay, their are a number of foreigners too who think otherwise. Saying "Proud To Be Filipino" is not a bad phrase on it's own. But to be honest I really don't think that will help Charice's career. Buying her CD is the best way to support her. People use Charice as an Opportunity to say PTBF because of the ethnicity connection. Honestly, I feel sorry for Charice being used.

  2. Thanks for taking time. Of course, buying her records is the best way to support her.

If other nationalities claim to be proud of their nationality, I do not feel offended at all, do you? Although we do not see lots of comments of that sort. It is a cultural thing I assume, we want to take pride out of something, which to me is not wrong as long as it is worth it. And it does not sound bragging.

Some people, just the mere sight of PTBP irks them, that I do not understand.

  3. If an American tells me that He/She is proud to be an American that's not a problem at all. Especially if it's in a Forum/Chatroom regarding that subject.

However, It is Charice's Channel that this PTBF posters are taking advantage of which in my opinion is Not the proper Channel to voice out feelings of despair and hopelessness.

It irks some fellow Filipinos in the states as other's claim they are being bashed by other races there. Personally, it irks me because I noticed a lot of people are just saying this words because of the trend. So many putting it up it looks like spam mail already.

To me, this is not the best way to represent Filipino pride. From my experience going to the US, a lot of Filipinos are doing well and even have good reputation as Hard working, Intelligent, and Reliable.

Now that made me feel proud and feel at peace. All I have to do is do my part and make my country proud by working hard on whatever and show the world that we're part of the competition. Regardless of the Political situation in the country.

Feeling good about someone's success is natural, but if we really want to help a fellow countryman like Charice, PTBF shoutouts is not the solution... Album sales and Concert ticket sales.
